A few days ago, I had an unexpected mishap that reminded me just how powerful compassion can be.
I was driving my golf cart when the brakes suddenly failed, and I backed into another car waiting for a parking spot.
I was shocked! I immediately jumped out to assess the damage. Thankfully, it was minimal—a broken taillight and a scratched bumper.
But what stood out to me wasn't the accident itself. It was how the other driver reacted.
He wasn't angry. He didn't yell or make me feel worse about what had happened. In fact, he actually asked if my golf cart was okay!
Believe me, that was the least of my worries. I just wanted to reassure him that I was insured and would take care of the damage.
His kindness made an uncomfortable situation so much easier to handle.
And it got me thinking.
When someone makes a mistake that negatively affects you, how do you react?
Of course, it's natural to feel upset when someone unexpectedly disrupts your day. We're human! But how we choose to respond can make a difference.
Imagine if that driver had jumped out of his car yelling at me. Would it have changed what happened? Fixed his taillight? Removed the scratches?
Of course not. It would have only added more stress to an already unpleasant situation.
Instead, he chose compassion.
Compassion doesn't mean ignoring a problem or letting someone off the hook. You can be upset, hold someone accountable, and still treat them with kindness.
And here's something worth remembering: When you respond with compassion instead of anger, you're not just making a positive difference in someone else's day. You're making a difference in your own.
That's having a Zenatude®—seeing the positive in yourself, others, and the situations around you.
So the next time someone makes a mistake that affects you, consider how you would want to be treated if you were in their shoes.
Because accidents happen. Compassion is a choice.
Have a Zenatudinal Day!
