Yesterday, as I was running up the walkway after my beach run, a man standing there looking at the ocean said, “you’re making me feel guilty.” I smiled and responded, “only you can make yourself feel guilty…I just inspire people to move.”
Feeling guilt shows that you care about how your actions affect others, and when you’re feeling guilty from within, it’s often a sign you’re not living up to your own standards.
I knew he didn’t intend to make me feel bad about working out, and I could tell (by his appearance) that he valued a healthy lifestyle. So I chose a positive and motivational response.
How many times have you said to someone, “you’re making me feel guilty,” because they’re doing something that, deep down, you know you want—or should—be doing?
Instead of trying to shame them, compliment their actions. It’s less harmful and creates a more positive, energetic vibe.
We are responsible for our own feelings, and only you can make yourself feel guilty.
Have a Zenatudinal Day!
