Comparison

April 2022

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” -Theodore Roosevelt

It’s one of those simple sayings that occasionally pops up in life. We may ponder on it for a few seconds then continue about our day…

Whether it’s in conversation about how well things are going for that person, hearing their exciting news, reading posts on social media, seeing someone start that awesome new job, eyeing someone’s new outfit or handbag, and at the same time, we’re actively comparing ourselves to them.

While we’re too busy not being happy for them, we find our happiness has dwindled.  That conniving little thief in that black pirate hat and red ugly mask has robbed you of your personal joy.

How do we STOP this crazy comparing? I’ll be the first to say, it’s not easy! It does take a little effort and can be done.

  • Focus on your strengths, we all have them! Are you, respectful, caring, compassionate, determined, patient, creative, disciplined?
  • Remind yourself of what you HAVE accomplished and that special talent you have.
  • Say three things you’re grateful for.
  • Be content with what you’ve got now. This doesn’t mean you stop improving or working on your goals.
  • Realize social media is NOT always reality. It’s someone’s “highlight” at that moment.
  • Celebrate with that person…feel their joy!
  • Take it in as a motivator to keep moving towards your success!

Again, this is not something simple that’s going to immediately come in to play when that red-masked comparison thief pops in your head. I find that journaling helps…it serves to add clarity in my life and reminds me of where I’ve been and how far I’ve come.

Focus on what you do have, acknowledge that there are opportunities waiting for you to make happen, and celebrate the wonderful people that surround you.

 Adios, comparison thief!
